Soil enzyme activity was measured in a forest manipulation experiment of canopy tree thinning and canopy tree thinning plus ercicaceous stem removal and soil tilling. Protease and arylsulfatase activity showed a significant decrease in the thinned and thinned and plowed treatments and cellulase and phenol oxidase activities were significantly lower in thinned than control and thinned and plowed plots, whereas the trend of peroxidase activity was opposite
