Introduction
- Adenoviruses (AdV): DNA viruses that infect virtually all vertebrate species
- Adenoviruses that infect reptiles and can cause severe symptoms and death, little is known in wild populations
- Most Adenoviruses are thought to co-evolve with hosts
- Anolis lizards on Staniel Cay in the Bahamas were found to be infected with a strain more similar to mammal AdVs
- Suggests horizontal transmission of viruses between hosts
- We performed laboratory and bioinformatic analyses to test the hypothesis that AdV is host-specific in anoles
