Some unique structures can copy the behavior of more complex peroxidases, without being made up of proteins. When these structures are made up of DNA, they’re nicknamed DNAzymes. One DNAzyme of interest is called G-quadruplex/Hemin (GQH). Using this DNAzyme in a sensor developed by our lab provides benefits over using regular enzymes. One downside of GQH is that it can lose its activity over time due to damage by essentially “working itself to death.” The objective of this research is to study how different conditions impact this behavior, and methods to protect GQH from damaging itself over time.
